Lucia Mathews and her husband, Arthur, thrived in the Bay Area at the turn of the early 20th century and helped develop a unique California style of the Arts and Crafts Movement that swept America at that time. Recreated with permission from the Oakland Museum of California we are thrilled to offer this limited edition digital print. In keeping with the Arts and Crafts Movement, each print is individually hand-colored in water color and gouache. Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) created color woodcut prints of American rural landscapes. Baumann was active in the era before photo-reproduction replaced wood engraving. He was active in the Chicago and Indiana countryside until he took a trip to Taos, N.M. which then became his home. He lived in the Santa Fe area for more than 50 years and carved into wood southwestern landscapes and spring and summer gardens and orchards. His prints are awash in brilliant, hand-ground pigments.

Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) spent many years living and working in Chicago and the Indiana countryside but a visit to New Mexico in 1918 turned into a lifetime. Southwestern colors, light and landscape had a profound effect on him that are captured in this late summer scene "Summer Clouds".

After moving to the Southwest in 1918, Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) purchased a Chevrolet car in 1920 that allowed him to explore the Southwest and eventualy the Pacific Coast. Baumann loved the Sequoia National Forest and the redwoods near San Francisco which inspired this print "Singing Trees".
