Baumann was active in the era before photo-reproduction replaced wood engraving. He was active in the Chicago and Indiana countryside until he took a trip to Taos, NM.....which then became home. He lived in the Santa Fe area for more than 50 years and carved into wood southwestern landscapes and spring and summer gardens and orchards. His prints are awash in brilliant, hand-ground pigments. Batcheldor, Pasadena, California. The Studio was part of the distinctive Californa-style Arts and Crafts movement and was a direct pushback against mass industrialization and factory manufacturing, also known as "Hand, Head, and Heart". This philosophy believed that everyday functional objects should also be beautiful, individual pieces of art. This style features bold, simple shapes and included motifs such as floral accents and patterns inspired by plants and nature.
