Nearly 30 years ago the manager of the gift shop for the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studo asked us to make this vase, modeled after a 1909 Russian vase that was part of his personal collection. With nothing more than a photo Antonio Ziranda beautifully crafted a sample. It was an immediate hit and one of our best selling vases. I archived this vase for a few years and recently asked Antonio to make a small batch, they arrived and are ready for their new homes!

Grueby Faience Company was founded in 1894 by William Grueby who was inspired by French pottery matte glazes, particularly the cucumber green that became the company's hallmark, and the refined simplicity of Japanese ceramics. In its heyday Grueby was sold through Tiffany Studios in New York City and Gustav Stickley incorporated Grueby tiles in his furniture. This beauty measures 12" high and has a subtle, abstracted leaf and pod design in repousse.

The "diamonte" (diamond) motif has been a favorite design for generations of coppersmiths in Santa Clara del Cobre. Historically the diamond has been a symbol of strength and invulnerability. Antonio created this striking vase for Cobre's 30th anniversary. The fish motif is inspired by "Pescado Blanco" (white fish), a Michoacan delicacy. Lake Patzcuaro is near Antonio's village and home to Pescado Blanco. The flora and fauna of the lake have been a source of inspiration for centuries to potters, weavers, woodcarvers and of course, coppersmiths! Albert Berry (1880-1949) immigrated from England at a young age and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. After years of work in design he moved to Alaska and worked as a miner. The natural beauty of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest fascinated him. His work was heavily influenced by Alaskan and Northwest motifs which made his Arts and Crafts copperwork unique. The Roycroft Metal Shop in East Aurora NY was in full production by 1910 and was the inspiration of Elbert Hubbard, a visionary inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement in England that was thriving at the time. Working with copper has been a tradition in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacan since pre-Hispanic times. A few of the workshops in Santa Clara have modernized but Antonio Ziranda is keeping the old tradition alive, as do all the craftsmen that I work with. Michoacan is an agricultural state filled with pine forests, croplands, and fruit orchards. This indigenous design was inspired by the segments you see in oranges and grapefruits, many of which are grown in the nearby Tierra Caliente (hotlands), not far from Antonio's village.

Batcheldor, Pasadena, California. The Studio was part of the distinctive Californa-style Arts and Crafts movement and was a direct pushback against mass industrialization and factory manufacturing, also known as "Hand, Head, and Heart". This philosophy believed that everyday functional objects should also be beautiful, individual pieces of art.
